How To Plant Azaleas Correctly

We really messed up, y’all! We thought we understood everything about how to plant azaleas. Mr. W even created a 40-foot-long raised flower bed for them because we knew they didn’t like to be sitting low in soggy soil. See why their raised flower bed wasn’t enough to keep them happy and what I did to fix it. Spoiler alert – it’s gonna be worth it!
HOW TO PLANT AZALEAS CORRECTLY, Y’ALL
Yeah, I learned how to plant azaleas correctly – the hard way! I’ve been gardening in zone 8 for years and finally got up the nerve to plant azaleas. I mean, they are the epitome of a southern flowering shrub, but I knew they could be finicky.

I didn’t realize it but we planted our azaleas in a low area that holds excess rainwater. Even though Mr. W created a raised flower bed for these GG Gerbing Azaleas, the yard dips and they were sitting in water for too long – which they hate!

I didn’t finish on the first day that I started, cuz I ran outta daylight and I was kind of waiting on the weather to level out. Well, it’s not doing that. I need to get this done before it gets any colder.
And yeah, what we’ve realized is there are, are high places and that’s where the azaleas are doing good. And then there are lower places because of the lower places in the yard water has just been standing like underneath them.
The key is planting the root ball about two inches higher than the soil in this area. They are mounded up very well. I’ll also replace mulch around them to retain moisture and protect them.
